Terra Nova Testing

From the Office of Catholic Schools, Diocese of Arlington:

Each elementary school in the Arlington Diocese administers the TerraNova standardized test to students in grades 2 through 7 in the spring term of each school year.  The TerraNova test measures achievement in reading, language arts, and mathematics. The TerraNova test is a norm-referenced, standardized achievement test, meaning it measures each child’s achievement in the subject area and compares it with the achievement of other students in the same grade.  The TerraNova test is a widely-accepted testing program. It is published by CTS/McGraw-Hill Company and is administered to students in districts across the United States.

Teachers, schools, and the Office of Catholic Schools use the TerraNova test results for many purposes:
Teachers use the TerraNova test results to:

  • evaluate student performance
  • diagnose strengths and weaknesses
  • create lesson plans
  • assess teaching methodologies
  • plan individual instruction for students with particular needs

School principals and resource professionals use the TerraNova test results to:

  • assess school programs
  • evaluate instructional methods
  • guide the development of teacher training programs

The Office of Catholic Schools uses the TerraNova test results to:

  • assess the performance of diocesan schools individually and collectively
  • design teacher training programs

The TerraNova test results are just one of the assessment measures our schools use in a continuous improvement process dedicated to providing the most effective instruction for our students.  As an example, teachers engage in the “hand-off process” to analyze testing data to plan for meaningful student instruction. Students who need additional assistance to attain the mastery level of the Diocesan curriculum are identified within this process.  The dialogue between the current teacher administering the test and the next grade level teacher helps the teacher to formulate additional strengths and approaches that can be employed to increase student performance in the areas identified as needing assistance to attain mastery.  Additional resources that can help facilitate instruction are identified within this process as well.  Discussions regarding the strategies, approaches and additional resources can ensue between the principal and the teacher as goals for the new year are formulated for/by the teacher.
Diocesan analysis surfaces the system-wide areas that need to be strengthened.  Professional development opportunities are designed to meet the identified area and are offered via instructional workshops, summer seminar opportunities, and the Arlington Academy.

The Office of Catholic Schools does not use standardized test scores as the sole measure for assessing a school’s performance.  Standardized test scores are only one measure of school performance.  More importantly, school-wide standardized test scores are affected by a wide variety of unique factors that are not addressed by reference to a single test result.  In isolation, standardized test scores are not an effective measure of a school’s performance and success.  For these reasons, the Office of Catholic Schools does not endorse the practice of comparing schools solely by standardized test scores.  Rather, The Office of Catholic Schools provides the following Diocesan-wide composite test scores by grade level:

The Office of Catholic Schools understands that parents seeking to make informed choices about their child’s school enrollment may wish to review a school’s TerraNova test scores as part of their decision-making process.  For that purpose, the TerraNova test score information is available on the websites of individual schools.  We encourage parents considering any of the schools to review all the information they need to make an informed school choice, including information about the spiritual, academic, and extra-curricular programs offered by the school, information about high school placement, and data about standardized test scores and score trends. Contact information for the Diocese of Arlington Catholic Schools is available here.

Testimonials

For a better understanding of the value of a Catholic education, why our teachers have chosen to work at St. Timothy and why our families send their children to and continue to support our school, please read some of our teacher and parent testimonials.

"It was very meaningful for my husband and me that when the Virginia Tech tragedy occurred, students from the school went to church to pray. In addition to expecting a lot out of our children in the classroom, the teachers know them individually and pray with them regularly."
Patsy Mangas, mother of DJ (’03), Tricia (’08) and Robbie (’14)

“The decision to send our children to Catholic school started as a tradition passed down from our parents and grandparents but has evolved into a way of life that we feel cannot be substituted by other educational avenues.  St. Timothy School has become a part of our family that continues to bless us.  There is no price tag that can be put on spiritual growth, character, family atmosphere and the level of caring that is shown to each individual student and their families by the staff and priests of St. Timothy's.”
Laurie Shourds, mother of Trevor ('07) Will  (’09) Lauren (’14) and Gerard (’08)

Being new to the area, our family felt confident that St. Timothy School was the right choice for us.  We had a very warm welcome from all and it was evident from the start that St. Timothy's shared the same Catholic values as our family.  The smiles on our children’s faces at the end of a school day are a huge reflection of St. Timothy School!”
Andrea Zavacky, mother of Austin (’11), Ethan (’13), and Devon (’15).

“The best part about about St. Timothy School is that the faculty, staff, and priests at St. Timothy are committed to the students.  They foster a safe, caring, and respectful environment that is felt the moment you walk into the school.   With our children’s busy schedules and their spending more and more time away from home, our family truly values the daily religious instruction they receive at St. Timothy, and we take pride in watching them develop strong morals and values.   We have found this school to be a wonderful collaboration of caring families who share the same Catholic Faith and who support one another.”
Sue Bucaro, mother of Katherine (’10) Brian (’12) Nicolas (’13) and Caroline (’15)

“Our three children have attended St. Timothy's since kindergarten. In our experience, the faculty and staff at St. Timothy are  concerned not only with the academics, but with helping the kids develop strong character by teaching them to treat others with kindness and respect.”
Cathy Aldrich, mother of Micaela (’08) Stephen (’11) Maddie (’13)

“We chose and stay committed to St. Timothy School because of the sense that Mrs. Kobyra, her staff and her faculty share in our belief that living the Catholic faith is critical to the well-being and redemption of our children. Growing up is difficult in our society today and it is comforting to know that we can count on the shared values of parents and teachers to provide some protection for our children.”
Mary Beth & Bernie Style, mother of Mary Grace (‘12) and Matthew (‘10)

“I teach at a Catholic school because I believe that Catholic school teachers are called to be educators.  It's not just a career for us.  We have more than an interest in educating our students.  We are vested in their growth and development on a much higher level.  I taught in the public schools at one time, but it wasn't until I came to St. Timothy's that I realized just how much of a difference I make in a young person's life. I sent my daughters to St. Timothy because along with their ABCs and math facts, they were taught to face challenges with faith, hope, and love.  Today, they can use these skills to make better decisions.”
Jessica Kurtis, 6th grade teacher, mother of Katie ('04) and Paige (’07)

“We appreciate the great spirit of community that exists among our school families.  Catholic values permeate all aspects of school life, enhancing the spiritual and moral growth of our children.  We are certain they are being well prepared for academically strong high schools and to meet the many challenges ahead.”
Frank and Elaine DiBartolomeo, parents of Frank  (’12)and Jacqueline (’15)

“Although we were hopeful that enrolling our children in a Catholic School would provide us with a sense of community, we never imagined the importance this would have for us and the comfort it would provide. We feel the similar sense of values has given us, as parents, a cornerstone on which we are able to make decisions for our children and know that they are the right ones for them, now and for the future.  We are deeply grateful to the community of St. Timothy School and parish!”
Megan and Jamie Beidleman, parents of Jeb (’08) Sarah (’10) Mollie (’12) and Noah (’16)

“Having been part of the St. Timothy School family for 15 years, we value and appreciate the dedication of the administration, faculty, and staff to strive to offer the best combination of religious and academic education for our children.”
Peter and Lisa Grau, parents of Matthew (’01) Daniel (’04) Christina (’07) and Maria (’12)

“St. Timothy’s is the quintessential catholic school.  Families, Administrators, Teachers and Clergy work together and are committed to the support and formation of strong work ethic in academics, family and community.”
Cathy Muha, mother of Gregory   (’98) Christopher (’02) Timothy (’04) Brendan  (‘08)

“Faith and values are what keeps families together.  I have been blessed to have been able to share faith and values with twenty graduating classes of St. Timothy School students.  In addition, I have seen all three of my daughters graduate from Catholic schools, and now their children are beginning their Catholic education.  What children learn in their early years – the importance of faith and values – remains with them for a lifetime.”
                Kamay Weiskopf, computer teacher

“I send my children to St Timothy School because the school prepares the students to be responsible individuals with Catholic values. Saint Timothy School provides opportunities for spiritual, intellectual, emotional and physical growth. They do so within a faith-based, secure and supportive environment.”
Kim Urlwin, mother of David (’12) Caroline (’13) and Kelly (’14)

“We feel that our children have been blessed to grow up in the warm embrace of Saint Timothy School. There is a true feeling of community and connectedness between everyone who is a part of the school, from the students and their parents, to the teachers, staff, administration and priests.

Academically, our children have been given a wonderful education. Our two oldest have entered high school extremely well prepared for success there and beyond. But there is so much more to the Saint Timothy experience. There are Friday Masses with the entire school. There are basketball teams to compete on with their classmates and friends. There are beautiful ceremonies for receiving the sacraments of First Penance, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation. The preparation for each of these sacraments truly encourages our children to grow in their faith. There are wonderful traditions for Kindergarten Graduation and especially for Eighth Grade Graduation. There are so many opportunities to form special friendships, and memories to cherish on as they grow older and move on.

We have been so pleased with the experience that each of our children has had at Saint Timothy School. Our association with the Saint Timothy Community has blessed our entire family.“
                Michael and Kathleen Hunter

“I have taught at St. Timothy School for 13 years because I get a chance to educate the whole child.  Not only do I get to give each child in my class their academic foundation, I get to touch their spiritual lives as well.”
                Linda Summers, kindergarten teacher

"St. Timothy has a longstanding tradition of fostering healthy, inquisitive minds and strong values. My five children have benefited from that tradition, and I am proud to be part of it as a teacher at St. Timothy."
Denise Rutledge, 1st grade teacher, mother of  Jen ('98) Stefanie ('99) Mike ('01) Courtney ('03) and Caroline (’14).
