Room Mother

The room mother for our class is Michele Orie.  You may contact her via email at: RM6A@sainttimothyschool.org. She will be coordinating volunteers for the Specials Classes, as well as special classroom activities and field trips and forwarding school-wide emails.  To assist her in communicating effectively, please contact her with your current email address.

Communication

SCHOOLNOTES: Please check my SchoolNotes site on a regular basis.  This is the primary mode of communication I use with families.  Better yet, click on the "notify me" link to register for automatic updates every time I change my page.

EMAIL: The best way to reach me is through email. (That way, if you think of something in the middle of the night, you can hop on your computer and jot it down!)  If you haven’t received a response within a day or two, please send in a note.  I rarely check my voice mail; if you need to call me, please do so through the office.

BI-WEEKLY PACKETS: On alternate Thursdays, Mrs. Young and I send home packets with graded papers and tests.  These are accompanied by a cover sheet that itemizes what is being returned, along with a signature line for the parent to sign.

Tests

Spelling: alternate Tuesdays, using the current Vocabulary Unit. (6A only)
Vocabulary: alternate Thursdays (6A & 6B)
Grammar: Thursdays at the time we finish the chapter. (6A &6B)
Social Studies: when we finish each chapter – there is ALWAYS a day of review before a test. (6A & 6B)
Religion: Thursdays (6A & 6B)
Math: when we finish each chapter - check Mrs. Young's SchoolNotes (6A & 6B)

Homework

HOMEWORK IS TO BE DONE BY EVERY STUDENT, EVERY NIGHT, IN EVERY SUBJECT IT IS ASSIGNED!  NO EXCEPTIONS!  NO EXCUSES!

SOCIAL STUDIES: Homework is very important as a teaching tool and a way to review what the student has read from the text. Doing some every night makes the assignment manageable and keeps the material fresh in the students' minds. Care in completing the Social Studies packet assignments will pay off in better preparedness for the Social Studies tests and in good homework grades. The Section Quizzes in the packet count as part of the overall Social Studies grade.  Since they are OPEN BOOK, it is hoped that these grades will help the overall grade.  Please check the answers for accuracy.  Guessing at the answers is not a good way to take the quizzes. The Section Assessments in the textbook are “Extra Credit,” but an excellent way for students to review the material and earn points in the process.  Additionally, students should spend a few minutes reviewing the vocabulary words that they are asked to define. These words appear on the test with the definitions from the text. If they have not reviewed them, the students will not do well when they have to match the words and their definitions. Finally, the Chapter Review assessment questions should be completed CAREFULLY and THOROUGHLY.

READING: We will read four novels this year.  Our reading homework is designed not only to help students recall what was read in class, but to analyze and synthesize the material.  Since the goal for all 6th graders is to become good readers AND good writers, it is important for students to answer homework questions in complete sentences along with a good dose of thought put into it.  Students are permitted (and encouraged) to bring home their books to help them with their homework.

SPELLING: (6A only) Please remember that the Unit Spelling Activities (sometimes referred to as “Spellbinders”) are due ON THE DAY OF THE SPELLING TEST.  These activities are geared to help students not only with spelling, but with Vocabulary.  Completing activities, like dividing words into syllables, will be a great benefit when similar questions appear on the Vocabulary tests.  Students who have trouble on Vocabulary tests may wish to concentrate on these activities in their Spelling homework.

More detailed information will be given at the Back-To-School Night on Wednesday, September 13.  Please plan on attending; however, if you can’t, a packet will go home with your child the next day.

Again, I’m excited about getting this year going.  Now that you’ve read this “Introductory Letter,” go check my SchoolNotes – they’re gonna WOW you!

Uniform

Check your handbook for the most up to date uniform requirements. You must keep your shirt tucked in, not bloused. If it is too short to stay tucked, it may be a sign that you need a larger shirt.

SOCKS: To avoid confusion, please refer to the Student Handbook, regarding the uniform requirements pertaining to socks.  They state, in part, that "Crew socks (white only)" are to be worn with the fall/spring uniform for both boys and girls.  They also describe the traditional uniform for girls which includes "brown knee socks or white cuffed or crew socks." Examples of crew socks are shown below.

Volunteering

To volunteer for Specials, please contact the room mother, who will prepare a schedule of volunteers for Art, Library and Computers.  For your convenience, schedules will be available online.

Battle of the Books

A diocesan-wide competition for interested 5th and 6th grade students.  Students read from a list of 16 books in a variety of genres.   Five students and two alternates will be chosen to compete in a Jeopardy style competition.  If interested, please print out the booklist and start reading!.
