Activities and Events
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL FOOD PANTRY, ongoing
The National Junior Honor Society devotes their time and talents to helping those less fortunate within the parish and community. They conduct a First Friday Food Pantry program, with the assistance of the school community, to benefit the parish’s St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry. With the help of the NJHS, the Food Pantry is able to feed over 150 community families a month. Additionally, the NJHS assembles 30 Thanksgiving boxes and provides hams and food for 30 Easter baskets. As part of their responsibilities, the NJHS members organize, collect, and stock the pantry each month. Through their assistance, they have had the opportunity to see how things are stored and distributed as well as making a significant contribution in time and product to the parish efforts.
LIVING STATIONS
Continuing a wonderful tradition that is a part of the school and our chapter of the National Junior Honor Society, the members share the Living Stations with the school and parish community during a Friday afternoon in Lent. Under the direction of their peers, the students perform the Living Stations with reverence and dignity.
CELL PHONE & EYEGLASS COLLECTIONS, ongoing
The NJHS has a year round program to collect used cell phones and eye-glasses! The collected eyeglasses are donated to the local Lions Club to help those in need be able to see. All prescriptions and kinds of eyeglasses are acceptable.
The NJHS members also collect used cell phones for recycling. The NJHS receives a small compensation for the cell phones, which helps fund the National Junior Honor Society’s various projects.
FUND RAISING ACTIVITIES, ongoing
Throughout the school year, the NJHS members sponsor a number of different fundraisers for their variety of projects. They hold a fall dance, pretzel and candy cane sales, free dress days, and other activities which raise thousands of dollars. They have then used these funds to send “Blankets to a Battalion,“ as well as “Stockings for Soldiers” filled with microwavable food and snacks to our military in Iraq and Afghanistan. The funds raised have also been used to support Fisher House (which provides free or low cost lodging to veterans and military families receiving treatment at military medical centers) as well as Catholic Charities in their efforts to provide families, children, and adults with comprehensive caring and competent support. Members of the NJHS honor the ultimate sacrifice of our veterans by visiting Arlington National Cemetery and laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
GENERAL INFORMATION/CRITERIA
The Anne Clark Chapter of NJHS was established in 1994. Membership is bestowed upon 7th grade students who excel in the areas of scholarship, leadership, character, citizenship, and service. Selection of new members is based on the following NJHS guidelines:
- Academically eligible students are identified and notified in writing. This refers to students with a 3.5 cumulative average and no special subject with an unsatisfactory grade after the first three quarters of seventh grade.
- Eligible students pick up a Student Activity Information Form from the school office and respond in writing to the questions regarding their school and extra-curricular activities, service, and character.
- A five-member faculty council, appointed by the principal (but not including the principal) evaluates each candidate's information along with input from other faculty members. The Honor Society Advisor is an ex-officio, non-voting member of the faculty council. The faculty council may use the right side of the report card in assessing the criteria of character. An eligible student must not have an unsatisfactory grade in any category on the right side of the report card.
- Candidates will be notified in writing of acceptance into the NJHS. A special ceremony will be held to formally induct the new members. Members will maintain all standards by which they were selected.
- Members who do not maintain the 3.5 cumulative average will be informed in writing at the close of each quarter. Members will have a probationary period of one quarter to raise their cumulative average to 3.5
- A member who serves a detention is required to meet with the faculty advisory board. The faculty council will review a member who earns a demerit or detention for cheating.
