Social Outreach at St. Timothy's
To encourage the social awareness of our students, St. Timothy School provides many opportunities throughout the year for our students and their families to provide aid to those in need and to perform community services.
Our Confirmation Candidates are required to perform community service. As we become aware of specific opportunities, they will be listed here.
Sponsor a Child in Rwanda
The 6th – 8th grade at STS was visited by Sister Patricia Mukanyonga, a Franciscan Sister of the Eucharistic Fraternity who survived the 1994 massacre in Rwanda. Holding the Blessed Sacrament in front of her when confronted by the militia that murdered thousands, she and others in the Church were spared. She shared with the students about how she has since opened three orphanages in Rwanda ministering to the children left homeless, disabled and alone. You can learn more about her ministry at www.bridgetorwanda.com and support can be sent to Bridge to Rwanda, Inc. at 4709 Briar Knoll Dr., Kettering, OH 45429.
The NJHS at St. Timothy is holding fundraisers in an attempt to raise enough money to sponsor children in Sister Pat's "Support our Students" program. The cost to sponsor a child for one year is $400. This covers high school tuition, room and board , clothes and medical expensein the dress-up day and pretzel fundraisers. They plan on holding more fundraisers toward their goal of sponsoring more students.
Supporting the Soldiers
The National Junior Honor Society and the Student Council of St. Timothy School are leading the school’s efforts to support the military. The NJHS project sent “ Blankets to a Battalion” last Christmas and they are now fundraising to send “Stockings for Soldiers’ filled with microwavable food/snacks for this Christmas. The student council raised nearly $1000 for the Pentagon Memorial Fund. The effort to support the men and women serving in the military has been felt personally by the school community as several faculty members have had children serving in Iraq. The school celebrated the safe return of Chris Kobyra, the principal’s son, last week with a “Thank You Chris!” banner signed by every student in the school. Members of the NJHS honored the ultimate sacrifice of our veterans by visiting Arlington National Cemetery and laying a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
A THANK YOU NOTE FROM IRAQ!
CELL PHONE & EYEGLASS COLLECTIONS, ongoing
The NJHS is collecting cell phones and eye-glasses! They will donate all eye-glasses to the Lions Club to help those in need be able to see. All prescriptions and kinds are acceptable. They will be recycling all cell phones. The NJHS will receive a small compensation for the cell phones, which will help fund the National Junior Honor Society’s project to ship Christmas stockings to the soldiers bravely serving our country in Iraq. Thank you for your support.
International Pilgrim Virgin Statue
St. Timothy School was recently blessed with the opportunity to participate in the celebration surrounding the visit of the International Pilgrim Virgin Statue of Our Lady of Fatima September 8 through the 12th. The statue, which celebrates the 90th anniversary of Our Lady's final apparition at Fatima, is spending 15 weeks in the Arlington Diocese. Mrs. Gott, coordinated the celebration to Mary that began on September 8th with Mass, rosary, procession and a birthday party celebration for the Virgin Mother. The children continued to honor Mary during the week as they brought flowers, cards, notes and prayers to Our Lady. The ceremony culminated with a rosary led by eighth graders: Catherine Armstrong, Ali Hahn, Taylor Hahn, Colin Lanahan, Erin Ryan, Sean O'Brien , and Alex Lucus. Each student led the school in the Glorious Mysteries, while Mrs. McAllister led the student body in song between each mystery. Mrs. Kobyra said, "It has truly been a blessing to begin the school year celebrating our Mother Mary. As a school family we are reminded that the most important thing we do together is grow in faith." The school’s devotion to Mary continues during October, the month honoring Our Lady of the Rosary. The students will participate in a Living Rosary.
Pentagon Memorial Fund
The Student Council at St. Timothy School raised $919 during the 2007-08 school year to benefit the Pentagon Memorial Fund. Their efforts began on September 11th when they collected donations from the student body for the privilege of a “free dress day”. Students wore red, white and blue and participated in a prayer service. The Student Council continued their fundraising efforts last week by making and selling snow cones during student lunches. Everyone appreciated the treat and the opportunity to make a difference.
Holy Childhood Association - Mission Update
During the 2006-2007 school year, St. Timothy students collected and donated $2,600 for the Holy Childhood Association Missions program through the Society of the Propagation of the Faith. Read the May 24, 2007 Arlington Herald article about the presentation of the donations to Father Patrick Posey, the Diocesan Director of the Propagation of the Faith.
Order a Children's World Mission Rosary with Booklet $5
Through participation in this program, St. Timothy students will be learning about Missions in distant countries, and participating, as missionaries themselves, in endeavors to spread the love of Jesus to everyone they meet!
The children can participate in a variety of ways:
- Praying for the Missions
- Fundraising for Missions
- Making sacrifices for the Missions.
Mrs. Gott will be meeting with the children once per quarter. Each meeting will have a feature country, and with the HCA mascot, Polly Parrot, the children will quickly grow in zeal for spreading the Good News of Jesus, and be encouraged by Mission successes.
The object is "Children Helping Children." Please support your little ones - even if it by contributing pocket change to a Mission jar, or collecting quarters. Please read over the literature that comes home through the brown envelope, and go to the web site to familiarize yourself with Holy Childhood Association.
We are prayerfully under the patronage of St. Theresa, the Little Flower, Patroness of the Missions.
God bless you, your families, and your newly commissioned missionaries!

First Friday Food Pantry
(NJHS sponsored)
NJHS sponsors collections for the St. Vincent de Paul food pantry. On the First Friday of the month, they request that students bring in a particular food item, based on the specific needs for the week. The NJHS students collect the canned goods and provide them to the food pantry for distribution for families within our community that are in need. |
